The Hexagon of Prayer

Mike Breen puts it this way in “Building A DIscipling Culture” :

Imagine a hexagon with each "leg" of the Lord's prayer on a side. Praying through each "leg" will eventually cause you to pause and reflect on what the Lord wants to speak to you. When you get hung up, reflect on why, and if there is an action He wants you to take, then do it!

  • Our Father, who art in heaven, Holy is your name.

    What does this mean?

    What does this communicate?

Spend time pondering this. Our God's home is in Heaven. The earth is His footstool. He spoke and the earth was. Nobody has spoken life into existence except our God. He holds this planet together and nothing on this earth has been formed without Him. He told the sun when to rise and the ocean where to stop. He makes it rain and not rain on His command. The whole of creation cries out for His return and for the restoration of the planet. He formed the foundations of the earth and the whole time had you on His mind.

The Lord is Holy, meaning that he is set apart from anything you can imagine. No man has seen the face of God and lived, yet Moses' face glowed for weeks after seeing the mere back of His glory as He passed. Where he is, there is no need for a sun because the train of His robe fills the temple. What does man say then, to his Creator? What do we possibly have that He desires? Yet still He comes to us. Oh friend, what troubles do you have that compare with the greatness of our Lord? What mountain can he not move when they melt like wax in his mere presence? What enemy can stand in his presence? And yet he has promised that he will never leave you! How much more can we say about this? How much more? How much more?

  • May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

What is he telling us to ask for?

What is he trying to communicate?

Surely he is not saying that the things of the Kingdom of Heaven could be experienced here on the earth, is he? The power, the peace, the justice, the sovereign will of God could actually be established here on the earth while we are alive? Surely not!

That, my friends, is exactly what He is saying to ask for. It is a picture that Heaven is close and constantly trying to break into our space here. The Kingdom is near and looking to break in to our homes, marriages, community, jobs and relationships. You are the carrier of heaven where ever you travel. At any time, through confession and belief, heaven can be experienced here on the earth, in you and around you. This is why you are powerful! It is important to ask yourself, "Where does heaven want to break into my life?" before moving to the next leg of the prayer. Wherever it is, don’t be afraid! Believe what God's word says! It is Heaven you are after and more than likely it is not just your freedom that is weighing in the balance.

  • Give us this day our daily bread.

What does this phrase say to you?

How far has the Lord brought you? Has He not provided and supplied all your needs up unto this point? Has He dropped you? Has He not proven Himself faithful? Even as you read this, let the memories become therapeutic to your heart.

The Lord owns the cattle on a thousand hills and all the earth is made to radiate His glory. At the sound of His voice the earth shakes and the mountains melt like wax before Him. He knows the number of hairs on your head. He is aware of every bird that falls to the ground. So ask yourself, my friend, how much more does he care about you?

This "leg" causes us to reset our minds in knowing that the Lord has us in the palm of His hand. We can rest from worry over our current and future needs because the Lord is keeping us. He has proven throughout history that He is faithful to thousands of generations that profess their love for Him.

If God is on your side, who can be against you?

If God is your Father, will He not provide?

"Come to me all you who are weary and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

What does the Lord want to say to you?

  • And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

This text is actually repeated again in Matthew 6:14:

"How dare we not forgive others after what we have been forgiven?"

This phrase can sometimes be very difficult as it brings us face to face with unresolved conflict and feelings of ill will or even hate against our brother. The Lord requires the continual giving and receiving of forgiveness as part of our walk. Make no mistake, it is a requirement for your freedom, for restoration, and for the Kingdom to break through.

  • And lead us not into temptation

This phrase comes as you call upon the Lord to be your guide as you acknowledge that you are a "carrier" of the Gospel. As the hope of eternity lives in you, may it be that you would walk only where He would have you walk and that you would not turn to the right or the left, but you would stay on His path. One aspect of this is that you would become "interruptible" during your day so that you can see the places where Heaven is wanting to break in. This phrases causes a reset on your day when it is crammed full with one appointment after another.

May we have grace to stop and see the bigger picture playing out around us, seeing heavenly opportunities in our work and play, and giving the opportunity for breakthrough in these areas.

  • ...but deliver us from the evil one.

"Your battle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Ephesians 6:12

It can't be said any plainer than this:

You have an enemy. He is not human so your fight is not with any of them.

He is real and wants to do you harm as you advance the gospel.

The God you serve saw him fall like lightening from the sky.

Recognize his schemes and remember that his power is nothing compared to the power living in you.
