Keeping it Real

During our first few years of making disciples, we jumped the gun at D2 and as soon as we saw transformation we sent them out the door. We have come to learn that transformation (D2) without confidence (D3) yields a crop of transformed non-competent disciples. We have also learned that confident (D3) without transformed (D2) yields a crop that we do not want. Thus, the marrying of D2 and D3 is imperative to release of a crop of healthy disciple-makers.


The Head, Heart, and Hands checklist was developed to help keep the matrimony between D2 and D3—producing a powerful D4.

    • Can they explain APEST and its critical role in the world?
    • Can they explain Up, In and Out and is there a rhythm of this in their lives?
    • Can they explain the Putman Circle, assess themselves accurately and others?
    • Can they Eat the Word and teach others to do the same?
    • Can they explain the Phases of Discipleship?
  • Heart
    • Can they communicate Abiding using John 15 clearly and is there evidence of this in their lives?
    • Can they explain the Learning Circle?
    • Can they communicate significant Learning Circle moments in their development?
    • Can they walk others through a significant Learning Circle moment?
    • Can they communicate clearly their Identity in Jesus?
    • Are they generous with their finances, not withholding from The Lord what is his?
  • Hands
    • Can they communicate and participate in the practice of out?
    • Are there People of Peace around them?
